🏞️Ancient Artifacts🏹 As @finstincts always says “Fly Fishing…Mostly!” When the fishing is slow there’s always other things to catch. A buzz, a good conversation, a view or if you’re really lucky, an ancient artifact! Good times abound and in the wild they are found 💫 “This is a large Archaic bifacial knife / butchering blade, sometimes called a Brazos River biface or knife preform. Why this fits perfectly for the Brazos River! • Size (6” x 2½”): That’s classic large knife territory — too big for a dart point, too refined to be just a core. • Heavy micro-chipping along the edges: That’s use-wear, not just knapping scars. It’s been worked hard, likely on meat, hide, and sinew. • Partial cortex left on one face: Common on functional knives — they didn’t waste time fully finishing what already worked. • Material: Brazos River chert is notorious for that dark, glossy look with cortex patches. • Location: The Brazos River is a known prehistoric occupation zone — water, game crossings, chert availability, and floodplain camps. Cultural / Timeframe For that stretch of the Brazos, this most likely falls into: • Middle to Late Archaic • Roughly 4,000–7,000 years old These knives were often: • Handheld or lightly hafted • Used for butchering large game, hide processing, and camp work • Resharpened repeatedly (which explains the edge wear and irregular outline) What makes it cool is that this wasn’t a “lost arrowhead” — this was a primary tool someone depended on.
